I wish to pass on an online game that the blind can play. It is a text based role playing game and best of all its free. I know that there must be many out there that like me enjoyed playing a rpg in one form or another. Well after going blind I thought those days were over till I found Alter Aeon. Its one place that ones blindness doesn’t matter and you can just have fun. Alter Aeon is an on-line gaming environment where people from around the globe can get together and interact in a huge virtual world. The game interface has been modified to support accessibility for people with vision impairment. I am an immortal, builder, player and have been blind for 9 years. I have been playing the game for going on 7 years now. The game has come a long way and the creator has gone out of his way to make the game as blind friendly as he can. In any case below is a link to the home page, check it out and judge for yourselves.

Thanks and hope to see you there,

it is a good game but i find it a little bit to basic. although i do agree the admins are brilliant and do care alot about blind people. their are not many muds that do only agent anguish alter eon and new worlds spasificly seem to care about making their games accessable. i mean most muds are quite accessable by defau.t because of them being text based but it is nice when a developer adds theese little things in to make it easyer for a blind player to play. i love muds and play a vast amount of them.

it is a good mud but it is hard to get levels like i have been playing and i have not managed to get a level in years.

Yes, it’s basic in ways, but ask yourself how elaborate would you want it? There are some games out there with ninety different commands you have to perform just to cast a spell. Then you might not even cast it. So for me basic is not all that bad of a thing. I have built many areas on the game and have several mortals with over 110 total levels. Dentin the creator of the game has put in many filters that help to reduce spam, has made a special map command for the blind that tells you where you have or not been already. There is even a special port for the blind and a blind mode that can be turned on at creation of your character. I have also tried many games and was even told by some that they have no special features for the blind. Once I was told we don’t have any special filters for the blind, nor do we really wish to cater to them. Followed by a goodbye and I was disconnected from the game. From day one Dentin and others have helped me to find ways around things that others found easy. I am the first blind builder and immortal on the game, which he had to add special coding to make this possible. In turn making the game even more blind friendly.

Jamie,

I suggest you start a new char from scratch. Start them out in the new newbie area called the newbie islands. These islands were created by Dentin and others to give the new players a place to start out where they could learn, have fun with no or little chances of them getting lost or end up in areas they shouldn’t be yet. I have test ran through these islands and feel that they make learning the game a lot easier. I wish we had them when I was a new player. Also on the website there are several articles written by immortals and players with tips, suggestions and even some walk throughs. Dentin has created the islands in such a way that each quest sends you to a new place with new monsters to kill and new things to learn. One change Dentin has made is in the leveling, you no longer have to find a trainer to level up to level 25. Nor do you have to find the trainer to train stats or practices. You would have to find a teacher though to learn new skills or spells. In any case try starting out in the new area and I am sure you will find it a lot more fun and quite a bit easier.

John,

There's an Alter Aeon soundpack for VIPMud that was contributed by the player Dime; you can download it from the Blind Player Support page at:

http://www.alteraeon.com/alter-2.1/blind.html

The direct download to the soundpack on the server is:

http://www.alteraeon.com/downloads/vipmud_soundpack_091213.zip

I hope that works for you!

Hello all,
I  just started a character and am having problems in the cemetary.  I am really getting hurt bad by the ghouls and mists.  I am a level 8warrior/level 4 mage.  I am wielding a leg bone.  Is there a better weapon for me to use?  Any other tips would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Greg,

I've found that the wooden staff you start out with at the very beginning is actually pretty good; I usually use it up to around level 10 or so, but you might find other things (like that leg bone) which also work well. But I think there might be a couple of other things that are more important than your exact weapon.

First, make sure you you're wearing all your equipment. If you've made it to the graveyard, you should have picked up gloves, rings, amulets, belts and other equipment along the way. Most of the things you run across at low levels (for example in Ahpuch's cave) are good to wear and will help out your character a lot. For the first ten or so levels, it's almost always safe to wear things you come across out in the field. You can also use the mage 'identify' spell to compare things more thoroughly than using the 'compare' command.

The second thing, since you're a warrior primary, is to use your warrior skills. You should have started out knowing a little bit of kick and parry; I'd practice these to the maximum, and make sure you kick a lot while fighting. You can also bash, but I don't usually use it since you get points in kick for free when you start. Parry is very powerful in terms of defense, and you'll take a lot fewer hits when it's practiced to a high level.

One last skill tip: practice multiple attacks if you can. You can practice it every few warrior levels, and each time you do it increases your attack speed.

Now for some actual graveyard strategies: it sounds like you're able to handle the skeletons ok, so if you have to you can fall back there for a little while until you gain another level. The ghouls are hard and will gang up on you; if there's too many of them, I often flee and wait for them to split up so I can take them one at a time. When they bite they may weaken you, and if too much of that builds up it's best to retreat until the weakening wears off.

I usually ignore the mists, because you pretty much can't hurt them unless you use fire spells or have a really heavily enchanted weapon. They will leave you alone unless you sleep in the same room as them. Make sure to get the shield from the chest after you defeat the ghoul lord! That shield is one of the first artifact type objects you'll find as a new player. It's very powerful.

On the other side of the graveyard you'll find the second crypt with the vampiress in it. Make sure you take care of all her minions before going after her; that makes it a lot easier.

I hope this helps!

Dentin has already given some various tactics.

The leg is a pretty decent weapon as well as the tombstone. The tombstone is two wield, but most likely you don’t have a shield yet anyway.

Another thought is to work around the graveyard and work your way up to level nine warrior and get disarm and leap at level ten.

I would normally leap till my move gets down then finish kicking.

Leap is a very useful skill for the warrior and can inflict a fair amount of damage.

Remember there is no shame in running or fleeing, a smart fighter does whatever he must to win the battle. Flee or run, sleep a tick or two then run back and fight again.

Lastly, reach out to others in the area or of your level, there might be another having the same problems as you are.

Grouping up later in the game in many cases will be the only way to defeat some mobs. Learning the tactics, commands and advantages of grouping at a low level will just help you later on. Besides, having a friend along to share in the battle and victory is always a bit more fun.

Jamie,

I would say by level 5 you should of killed the carver shaman and returned back to Whelan and talk to them. He will give you another quest in the stony fields. Within these fields are several big hairy beasts that will give good exp for a while.. Next I would find my way into the caves. Walk about there a while find the staff and return it to Whelan.

I would also suggest checking out the quest walk throughs at:

http://www.dentinmud.org/quests/index.html

Another suggestion is to ask on newbie for some options of where to go next.

If you keep returning to Whelan and complete each of his tasks when can you will be ready for the next area.

      Re: altar aeonHello all,
I just started a character and am having problems in the cemetary. I am really getting hurt bad by the ghouls and mists. I am a level 8warrior/level 4 mage. I am wielding a leg bone. Is there a better weapon for me to use? Any other tips would be appreciated.
      Thanks,

Re: altar aeonHi is there anything on the sight to let you know where to go for what level. i normally stay in one place till i am not getting much points before moving on. this means that i don't rise very quickly. so that first area on the newbie island i would stay there till lvl 10 killing the imps and zombies i find.

Anyone familiar with setting keys?
I am trying to set keys using my numpad, and it isn't working. I first hit ctrl plus shift plus K to walk me through the steps. I hit the numpad 1, I hit tab and type southwest, tab over and check the box to use for all characters, tab to ok, tab to done, it does not work.
I do ctrl plus shift plus K and notice that the command I just did is labled as global at the top of the list, nothing else but the keystroke that I just did isn';t working when I press the numpad 1 key.
It just places a 1 in my edit screen as if I was just typing a number 1 for the heck of it.
Now, earlier I did the same steps only put numpad 3 for southeast, and it works.
How come numpad 1 isn't working? the key isn't being used for anyting currently.

Hello,
I am in the process of purchasing a mud, but I am having a hard time reading the shell with jaws.
Does anyone have any clues or tips on how to make reading the shell easier?
At the moment it seams like all I can do is use the jaws cursor.
I would really like to be able to do this, I am really interested in learning the C language and starting up this mud.
Again, any tips would be appreciated.
